European Union Center Names First EU FellowsThe European Union Center at the University of Missouri-Columbia, headed by Byron Scott, Professor Emeritus of the School of Journalism, seeks to build ties between Americans and Europeans. To that end, the Center has created starter grants to encourage the development of productive partnerships. The European Union Starter Grant program is designed to assist scholars in forming research, exchange, or training partnerships with colleagues from any of the 27 member-nations of the EU. These grants are intended to be used for travel by either an MU participant or EU-based colleague, or to fund preliminary work leading to a major funding proposal that will support further work by the partners. A maximum of $3,500 is awarded per proposal, and any full- or part-time member of the faculty currently working at the University of Missouri on the Columbia campus is eligible to participate regardless of rank, tenure status, or discipline. Awardees are considered Fellows of the Center and will receive its support in their projects. The European Union Center has now named their inaugural EU Fellows: Dr. Johann Bruhn, Research Associate Professor, Division of Plant Sciences, and Prof. Jeanne D. Mihail, Director of Graduate Studies, Division of Plant Sciences, for Truffle Cultivation in North America and Europe. Prof. Edmund B. Lambeth, Professor Emeritus, School of Journalism, and Prof. L. Marvin Overby, Professor, Department of Political Science, for An exchange program between the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Szeged in Hungary, focusing around their respective colleges of arts and sciences, as well as parallel creative and scholarly initiatives within the Missouri School of Journalism. Prof. Thomas P. Quinn, Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Radiology, for A research collaboration to develop novel radioimaging agents for the cell surface enzyme ecto-5'nucleaotidase/CD73. Davis, Executive Director of the Freedom of Information Center, and Associate Professor & Chair, News-Editorial, School of Journalism, for A joint proposal between the National Freedom of Information Coalition and Access Info Europe for a comparative study of United States and EU freedom of information laws, as well as a proposal to fund a conference for EU access advocates. Prof. Vladislav V. Glinskii, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, School of Medicine, for Crosstalk between Tumor Cells and Microvascular Endothelium in Hematogenous Cancer Metastasis. Prof. Lanis L. Hicks, Director of the Graduate Program in Health Services Management, for Collaborative Cross-National Research on Health Care Systems. The goal of this proposal is to support faculty exchanges to expand opportunities for collaboration in the development of cross-national projects. Prof. Laura M. J. Prof. Josephine Stealey, Sculptor and Professor, Department of Art, for Performance Art: A Collaborative Investigation in the Production of Multi-Media Performances About Man's Relationship to Nature in the Face of Global Environmental Degradation.
