Arriving in Salzburg , Austria to participate in Session 432 of the Salzburg Seminar, I expected to gain new insight regarding how the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) are managing their bilateral relationship during the present time. Especially important to note is that current times are filled with unprecedented global changes, vacillating tensions and strained bilateral relationships between the US and some EU member countries. This summer, the Asian Affairs Center (AAC) hosted 74 Chinese and Korean visitors participating in unique, short-term educational programs. These programs were designed for Korean English teachers, community, and provincial and national officials in the Chinese and Korean governments, as well as selected college students from Pacific Rim countries. This award is a clear indication of the high quality of the researchers, the original and the unique approach of the Cambio Center to the issues of immigration --including philosophy and multidisciplinary work--, and the urgency and relevance of the subject matter. The proposal is led by fellows Corinne Valdivia (Agricultural Economics) and Anne Dannerbeck-Janku (Social Work), submitted to their very competitive and peer-reviewed National Research Initiative 2006 grants program. The proposal is titled "Asset Accumulation Strategies in Three New Settlement Communities," and will span research work for three years, starting in October 2006. Besides the co-PIs, fellows participating in this project are Steve Jeanetta (Community Development), Keith Jamtgaard (OSEDA), and Domingo Martínez, Cambio Center Director. Also, other fellows provided ideas and took part in the discussions to write the proposal, back in December and January. More... Building Learning Community in a Global Context In A Call to Leadership, NASULGC (2004) challenges universities to build learning a community in a global context. The cross-cultural competencies needed by our students and other MU constituents increasingly require interdisciplinary approaches. As Moats-Gallagher said at a recent NASULGC presentation, ?t)he extent to which an institution incorporates a global sense into its culture is crucial in attracting and retaining the best faculty and students…Unless a global vision emanates from the topmost leadership postion(s), internationalization will only find pockets of support and will not permeate the fabric and culture of the university. In an era where global concerns require interdisciplinary approaches, the coordination of campus international programs across academic units is vital (Moats-Gallaher, pp.1-2). More... Greetings from the Vice Provost In a few weeks, we will witness the waning of the summer heat and the return of our students and faculty from summer vacations. We will also await the changing colors of autumn foliage and the return of the season of MU Tiger football. These changes are inevitable and are embraced with great expectancy.
