New collaborative agreement with Chinese University

Representatives from Beijing Normal University met with Chancellor Brady Deaton on Wednesday, Oct. 26 to sign a collaborative agreement between MU and Beijing Normal University.
2nd Annual Korea Week begins

The second annual celebration of Korea Week began on Monday, Nov. 7 with a reception hosted by the Korean Students Association. Numerous events are scheduled from Nov. 7 to Nov. 11 including lectures, films , a bone marrow drive for a 15-year-old adopted girl in Kansas City and a performance by the Seoul Performing Arts Company.

International Education Week kicks off with Peace Corps presentation
Dr. Josephine Olsen will give a guest lecture and a presentation on Friday, Nov. 11 to kick off International Education Week. The International Center has planned numerous activities and festivities.
Student organization raises funds to send African Children to school
Jordan Smith, a senior business major, founded MUnity, an organization committed to raising money to send African children to primary school. To date, the organization has raised $1,200 of its $16,000 goal.
Department of Education, School and Counseling Psychology hosts 1st Annual Cultural Immersion Program
14 graduate students from National Taiwan Normal University visited MU from Aug. 21 to Aug. 31. The visiting students were invited to a number of presentations and a number of cultural and social events. Initial responses to the program have been positive.
German science academy recognizes MU professor
Kattesh Katti, professor of radiology and physics, was awarded the 2005 - 2006 Gauss professorship from the Academy of Sciences in Gottingen Germany. Katti will spend two months at the University of Gottingen to deliver lectures on cancer nanotechnology, therapy and diagnosis.
$4.4 million grant awarded for African plant research
The International Center for Indigenous Phytotherapy Studies, a collaborative research effort between MU and the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, was awarded a $4.4 million grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicines. The center will research the effectiveness of indigenous medicinal plants used in South Africa.

New International Student Orientation
The International Center will begin checking-in for its Winter 2006 New International Student Orientation on Dec. 16. The orientation gives new international students essential information regarding their stay at MU. The session will begin at 8:00 am on Monday, Jan. 9 at the International Center, N52 Memorial Union.

Cambio Center Brown Seminar
The Cambio Center will be hosting a brown bag seminar on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 1:00 p.m. entitled "Alternation Theory and Biculturalism: A New Articulation Strategy". Learn how to understand articulation and design programs using the same methods as several large, federally funded Latino youth intervention programs.

Dear Reader,
Welcome to the November issue of the IPFD Newsletter. Although the person in charge of this communication has changed, we at the Vice Provost's office want to reaffirm our commitment to globalization, faculty growth and disability issues while moving forward.
The more things change, the more they stay the same; time flies like an arrow; knowledge is power. Cliches about the fundamental truths of innovation, time and wisdom run rampant in cultural consciousnesses all over the world, yet when you try to discount the tired sayings as common sense, you realize how true they are. The potency of quotes like these have given them a longevity that has spanned almost all of human history. Why bring these up in to the IPFD audience?
It's quite simple and ingenious much like the phrases being referred to. The IPFD Newsletter is going to undergo a change. To use another cliche, we are going to start thinking outside of the box. In the coming months, the stories you read here will become more that just links to other people's work. MU professors and administrators will have a forum with which to distribute their information in a timely manner, and you, dear readers, will be able to better understand why the University of Missouri - Columbia is so critically important to the state, the county and the world.
Change must begin somewhere. Usually, the first step is a small one that whets the audience's appetite. In that vein, the first difference you will notice in this issue is the use of people's MU degree information wherever applicable. The IPFD office is proud of the University, and this small change recognizes that.
