Editor's Note

Dear Reader,

Nearly ninety years ago Woodrow Wilson observed, "We are all citizens of the world; and the tragedy of our time is that we do not know this."

With reference to those words and with deep appreciation for my time spent at the University of Missouri-Columbia, I must confess that I have witnessed first-hand the inspiring works of a countless number of globally-conscious, talented individuals, whether they are professors, students, administrators or community members, who have all made tireless efforts to take to heart Wilson's words and then actively work to counter the tragedy that he once described.

And so each May, as our university confers thousands of degrees upon graduates who will enter the world beyond our academic walls, it is with great hope and pride that we as a university are privileged to trust that we may have moved from Wilson's poignant observations to those once uttered by Margaret Mead who said to "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

With respect for those words, it is our belief at the University of Missouri-Columbia that global citizenship is not simply an indisputable fact, but rather a grand working vision of a future that we as a community are obliged to collectively help design. Please enjoy the stories listed in this month's newsletter and thank you for a captivating academic year.

As always, Dear Reader, your comments, contributions, and critiques are always well received.

Sincerely,

Daniel V. Botello
