Editor's Note

Dear Reader,

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet firmly on the ground.” With these words, perhaps he could’ve been saying to us that while the power of our ideas may be the fruit of our humanity, we must never forget the human foundation upon which our intellectual inventions rest.

It seems that every moment of our lives we are inundated with an endless stream of ideas. As Missouri's great state, land-grant university, the University of Missouri-Columbia is in the business of ideas. And yet, somehow the business of ideas, research, and information can never fully encapsulate the essence of what we do.

The ever-present truth is that ideas, discoveries, innovations, and breakthroughs are done only in the service of people. These ideas are intellectually conceived for people, by people, and in the presence of great people; and therefore truly it is people that our ideas aim to serve.

As a tribute to this notion, you will find within this end-of-year edition, a selection of stories illustrating just a fraction of what makes our faculty world-class, our students the best and brightest, our athletes top-notch, and our university leaders internationally versed and globally aware.

Please enjoy the personal insights and stories listed herein by those that help make our university alive and vibrant; and as always, Dear Reader, your comments and contributions are always well-received.

Sincerely,

Daniel V. Botello
