Making MU accessible, Matt Buckley
After having spent only a few months on the job, Matt Buckley is meeting the challenges of a Special Needs Advisor at the Office of Disability Services. Editor's Note For most Midwesterners the summer months are often a time for cross-country travel, family vacations, and outdoor activities; and likewise I made a brief excursion of my own and returned home to Kansas City to be with family and friends on the Fourth of July. During my return to familiar surroundings, familiar faces, and familiar neighborhood stories, I was awestruck by the vivid sense of patriotic reverence for our nation's history that echoes throughout the country during this time of year, and certainly from my own inner city block that has provided the backdrop for my family history over the past century. As I caught up with long-time friends, at some point I found myself reflecting on the words of John F. Kennedy. As he urged us to recall a higher moral plain in which our patriotic and familial identities are grounded, he noted that, "Mothers all want their sons to grow up to be Presidents, but they do not want them to become politicians in the process." So, as we expand upon and renew bonds with our international constituents, assist in developing distinguished MU faculty, and aim to provide quality support services to make our university truly accessible for all individuals, we are reminded that through our actions we fulfill a purpose that is always rooted in a sincere sense of duty and mission that helps to make our university, our country, and our world a significantly better place. As always, Dear Reader, your comments, critiques, and contributions are always welcome with kind regards. Sincerely, Events Disability Services Recreation |
