Ellis Ingram, MU's Pathology Associate Professor, Receives 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring

Photo of Ellis IngramOne of MU’s own was among the nine individuals from eight institutions receiving the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). Each award includes $10,000 in the form of a grant to continue their mentoring work. Ellis Ingram, Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Science in MU's School of Medicine was recognized for his efforts to mentor young people. Selection is based on two major criteria set by the National Science Board: the intellectual merit of mentoring activities and their broader impact. Dr. Ingram and his wife Pam traveled to Washington, DC to participate in the May 6 ceremony at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Photo of Jiaozhou Yangge Huang Jinxiu performing a fan danceMU's Chinese community, one of the largest foreign communities on campus, launched the first China Night on April 25, 2004, an evening dedicated to showcasing the expansive Chinese culture. The Columbia Performing Arts Center came alive that evening as talented performers showcased components of Chinese culture, including fan folding, dance, opera, and Kung-Fu exhibition. The songs and dances captured the essence of traditional Chinese tribes, and more modern and contemporary art forms.(Read More)

This month’s spotlight shines on Judith Stallmann, Professor of Agricultural Economics, Rural Sociology and Truman School of Public Affairs. Stallmann’s work is policy- oriented, with a special interest in state and local public finance. Recently she presented her research for the Southern Regional Science Association detailing the Streamlined Sales Tax proposal, which allowed taxation of internet sales. She has also resurrected a paper on the role of local government in local economic development. Stallmann is experienced with presentation of state and local public finance issues such as municipal finance, property tax, economic development finance, and state budget. She also works diligently to expose Missouri's rank on the nation-wide scale in regards to all of these issues. (Read More)

Cannon explosion at University Place

When Elaine Pohl and Hongwen Ning began their ping pong game on Thursday evening, April 29th at the University Place Apartments, they never expected such an interesting match. Pohl, an English teacher through the Asian Affairs Center, and Ning, a student at MU, were interrupted when a piece of a Civil War-era cannon tore a hole through the wall and landed on their table. Four other students, Zheng Wang, Yong Liu, Wenxue Tian, and Xiaoming Gou, were watching the game but immediately ran away and returned to their rooms after the disturbance. Pohl went outside to call the police and report the incident, while Wang and Ning reported to the management office.(Read More)
