Celebrating Black History Month

The University of Missouri joins the rest of the nation in celebrating Black History Month during the month of February. Originally launched in 1926 as Black History Week by noted black scholar and historian, Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), the celebration was held during the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. It was later expanded and became established as “Black History Month” in 1976.

Under the directorship of Dr. Julius Thompson, the Black Studies Program and the Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center, a series of events featuring town hall meetings, exhibitions, lectures and symposia will be held for the campus community to engage and participate in African American culture and heritage.

For more information, please contact Dr. Julius Thompson.

The Office of Undergraduate Research assists students in participating in research here at MU. It was established in fall of 2002 as a way to promote undergraduate research both on and off campus by working with undergraduate research programs, such as the McNair Scholars Program and the College of Arts and Science Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program. The office is staffed by Director Linda Blockus, and Assistant Director Susan Renoe.

Brandon Tilghman, a senior in Chemistry featured above says the greatest benefits gained from being involved in different research programs at MU have been traveling around the country presenting his research at different conferences and meeting other minority students that have similar career goals and interests. He has presented his research at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in New Orleans and San Diego, the Biophysical Society Annual Meeting in San Antonio, the MU Undergraduate Research Day at the State Capitol in Jefferson City, the MU Summer Science Symposium and the MU Life Sciences Learning Community Fall Symposium. He has also submitted his research for publication in the Biophysical Journal.
